$11.7 Million Federal Grant to Fund Health Clinic

LEXINGTON, Ky. — An $11.7 million federal grant was awarded to build a 60,000-square-foot physical and mental health treatment facility for the poor and homeless in Lexington.
 
The grant comes from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and has been in the works for more than a year.

Army Medical Facilities Contract Goes to General Dynamics

FAIRFAX, Va. — A contract to support the U.S. Army Medical Department’s healthcare construction projects was awarded to General Dynamics Information Technology, a business unit of international contracting firm General Dynamics.

The indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract is one of five granted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and includes modernization of Army medical facilities and the transition to newly constructed facilities. The projects are potentially valued at $409 million if all options are exercised.

Construction Begins on Medical School Tower

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Ground breaking ceremonies were held recently at Pikeville College to celebrate the construction of a nine-story educational facility, expanded clinical skills center and cafeteria/commons scheduled to be completed in March 2012.
 
The facility has a projected cost of $25 million, with ancillary costs elevating the project to about $30 million.

Medical Office Developer Files for Bankruptcy

INDIANAPOLIS — The developer of an unfinished medical office complex filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection, four years after its main lender also filed for bankruptcy.
 
Binford Medical Developers, based in Indianapolis, filed Chapter 11 reorganization earlier this month on an $8.5 million, 47,000-square-foot unfinished project in the city. The decision to file for bankruptcy protection was done in hopes of preventing a forced sale to collect unpaid taxes and to resume construction on the 17-acre property, according to the company.

HUD to Insure Hospital Construction Loan

WILLAMETTE, Ore. — The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has made it possible for work to begin on a hospital project in Stayton, Ore., by insuring a $21.7 million mortgage loan for construction, according to reports.

Officials with Santiam Memorial Hospital had been waiting for construction to start on a new four-story patient tower that will replace an aging tower built in 1953,  but could not do so without the final bit of financing in place. The commitment to insure the mortgage was made by HUD, the agency said in a written statement.

$727 Million in Federal Grants to Local Health Centers

Community health centers across the nation will be seeing an infusion of capital after Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced $727 million in grants. Ranging in size from $500,000 for a clinic in Sacramento, Calif., to $12 million for a neighborhood health center in Mount Vernon, N.Y., the federal grants are being issued as part of the Affordable Care Act.
 
Community health centers service nearly 19 million patients annually, about 40 percent of whom have no health insurance, according to and HHS report.

CDCR Issues RFQ for $600 Million Prison Hospital

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — State officials issued a request for qualifications for the design and construction of the planned 1.2 million-square-foot corrections department medical complex in Stockton.
 
The proposed California Health Care Facility, which will house and treat 1,722 male inmate-patients with serious or chronic medical and mental health conditions, has a construction budget of $600 million, according to the notice issued by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
