WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Department of Veterans Affairs awarded a $580.2 million construction contract to build the Denver Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) replacement facility on the same campus as the University of Colorado Hospital complex in Aurora, Colo., at the site of the former Fitzsimons Army Medical Center.
PHOENIX — In its second major merger this year, HMC Architects merged with Substance Design Consortium, a Phoenix-based design firm.
The new firm will be known as HMC+Substance Design and will operate from its existing studio in downtown Phoenix.
Earlier this year, HMC Architects merged with San Francisco-based Beverly Prior Architects, forming HMC+Beverly Prior Architects.

BETHESDA, Md. — Martek Global Services, a provider of strategic and tactical facilities and acquisition support solutions, was awarded a five-year, $6.5 million blanket purchase agreement (BPA) to provide staff and support to the U.S. Medical Department’s North Atlantic Regional Contracting Office (NARCO).
For more than 75 years, NARCO has specialized in procuring medical and non-medical supplies, equipment and services. Martek will work with NARCO to continue to accomplish these tasks in the most efficient way possible, Martek officials said.
GREEN BAY, Wis. — KI, a Green Bay, Wis.-based furniture supplier, entered a three-year contract with the Premier health care alliance to supply furniture to its group of more than 2,500 U.S. hospitals and 77,000 other health care sites.
The contract begins Jan. 1, 2012.
CHARLOTTE, Mich. — Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital thinks outside the box with its new AL!VE facility in Charlotte, Mich.
The 68,000-square-foot, 14-acre health and wellness center held open houses in October and opens to patients in mid-November. The $18.5 million project houses the hospital’s physical therapy unit, as well as lifestyle and fitness components for community use.
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — A conference to prepare the healthcare industry for the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) unique device identifier (UDI) regulation is scheduled for Nov. 30-Dec. 1, 2011 at the Hyatt Regency in Cambridge, Mass.
The UDI rule will require many organizations to implement new or improved systems and processes to efficiently mark or tag equipment, scan device information at various points in its lifecycle, and transmit that data to the UDI database and other software systems.
