QUEENS CREEK, Ariz. — Banner Ironwood Medical Center has broken ground on an expansion that will add more than 32,000 square feet to its Queen Creek, Ariz., campus, increasing emergency and interventional care capacity.
The project, which broke ground Aug. 27, will add a two-story building to the existing emergency department, expand the department’s lobby and create space for a new interventional radiology suite. Completion is scheduled for December 2027.
The expansion at Banner Ironwood Medical Center, 37000 N. Gantzel Road, is intended to address growing demand while improving the patient experience in the emergency department. Banner Health said the added space is expected to improve wait times, privacy and capacity for critically ill patients, supporting a smoother care experience through discharge.

The emergency department lobby will also be enlarged to better accommodate patients and families.
“This project is a reflection of our commitment to giving back to the Queen Creek community,” said Darren McCollem, chief executive officer of Banner Ironwood, according to a press release from Banner Health.
ARCHSOL is the architect for the expansion and is working with Banner Health and Mortenson, which is leading construction. ARCHSOL said planning for the active hospital campus must account for clinical operations, infrastructure, circulation and construction phasing while the facility continues serving patients.
The architecture firm also identified infection prevention, emergency access, utility coordination and continuity of care as considerations during construction. The new spaces are being designed to connect with existing departments while allowing the campus to adapt to future clinical needs.
Banner Ironwood has served Queen Creek and the surrounding area for more than a decade. The health system characterized the expansion as part of its effort to reinvest resources in community facilities and access to care.
