SUNRISE, Fla. — Turner Construction Co. and Baptist Health South Florida have broken ground on Baptist Health Sunrise Hospital, a planned hospital campus the organizations describe as a more than $500 million investment in western Broward County.
Baptist Health said the seven-story, 340,000-square-foot facility in Sunrise is expected to open to patients in 2029.
The groundbreaking took place Jan. 28 and drew Baptist Health leadership, Turner representatives and community leaders. The project is planned at 12401 W. Oakland Park Blvd. in Sunrise.
“This groundbreaking of Baptist Health Sunrise Hospital, our first hospital in Broward, marks a pivotal moment in our journey to expand trusted, compassionate care across the region,” said Bo Boulenger, chief executive officer of Baptist Health. “It reflects our unwavering commitment to strengthening care access for the families we serve and ensuring that world-class care is always close to home,” according to a press release from Baptist Health South Florida.
The hospital is designed as a modern, future-ready campus that will incorporate AI-enabled clinical systems, robotic-assisted surgery and digital integration with the broader Baptist Health network. The organization said the building’s flexible infrastructure is intended to adapt as healthcare technology evolves.
Planned features include 100 inpatient beds at full capacity — including 10 critical care beds — a 30-bed emergency department with three triage areas and four surgical suites with robotic-assisted capabilities, Baptist Health said. Turner’s project description cited the same clinical capacity elements and also pointed to a 25,000-square-foot medical office building housing an array of services.
Turner said the campus will also include a central energy plant designed to enhance operational reliability and resiliency, including support for critical hospital operations during power disruptions or extreme weather events.
“This project reflects a significant investment in the future of healthcare for the Sunrise community,” said Kevin McCormick, vice president and general manager of Turner Construction Company. “Turner is proud to partner with Baptist Health on a hospital that prioritizes resiliency, advanced technology, and a patient-focused environment while enabling flexibility to grow alongside the community it serves,” according to an insight from Turner Construction Company.
Baptist Health said the site plan includes 1,080 parking spaces across a five-story parking garage and surface lots, along with a 15-acre conservation easement intended to protect nearby wetlands and local biodiversity.
