DECORAH, Iowa — WinnMed has wrapped the final major phase of its Transforming Tomorrow campus expansion and renovation project with the completion of a new 42,000-square-foot outpatient center in Decorah, Iowa.

Designed by Wold Architects & Engineers and built by Graham Construction and Joseph Construction, the multiphase effort also included an expanded surgery center and a renovated mother-baby unit.

The outpatient center features flexible clinical spaces, technology-driven registration and scheduling, and a patient-centered layout intended to improve the arrival and care experience. According to Wold, the design also incorporates sustainable building systems and materials.

The work was completed in three phases to minimize disruptions to hospital operations. The renovated mother-baby unit opened in January, followed by the expanded surgery center in May and, most recently, completion of the outpatient center.

The campus improvements grew out of a comprehensive master facilities plan developed through Wold’s longstanding partnership with WinnMed. That plan evolved as the health system responded to changing community needs and lessons learned following the COVID-19 pandemic, establishing a framework for a more flexible and efficient campus.

A collaborative Lean 3P planning process shaped the campus transformation, with input from hospital leadership, providers and frontline staff.

“Through an intensive planning process and close collaboration with hospital leadership, providers and frontline staff, we were able to translate the way care is delivered today into environments that are both purposeful and adaptable,” said Rachel Hendrickson, Healthcare Practice Leader at Wold, in a press release from the firm.

The expanded surgery center provides additional capacity and improved surgical environments to support WinnMed’s growing surgical services. The mother-baby unit was reconfigured and renovated to provide an updated environment for families and care teams throughout the childbirth experience.

Together with the outpatient center, those improvements were designed to improve patient access and streamline care delivery across the campus.

Steve Slessor, Chief Administrative Officer at WinnMed, said the design process prompted changes to the original clinic expansion plans.

“During the design phase, Wold recommended significant changes that ultimately transformed our clinic expansion for the better,” Slessor said in Wold’s press release. “It would have been easy to stay the course, but the team took the time to understand what we really needed and had the expertise to challenge the original direction.”
