SYRACUSE, N.Y.—The State University of New York (SUNY) recently opened its Upstate University Hospital Nappi Wellness Institute, a new 200,000-square-foot outpatient facility. A global leader in sustainable design, Stantec designed the healthcare space that combines family medicine, pediatric care, behavioral health, and other specialty clinics under one roof.

Embracing a new model of integrated and preventative care, the Nappi Wellness Institute attends to the whole person—recognizing individual behavior and social determinants of health are the main influence of health and well-being.

Spanning five stories, the Institute provides more than 240 exam and consultation rooms for primary and specialty care for chronic diseases, as well as lab and radiology services, retail pharmacy, Connect Care, a geriatrics unit, clinic embedded behavioral health services, primary care for adult and pediatric patients, and endocrinology and osteoporosis. It also houses the Center for International Health, Inclusive Health Services, and the Joslin Diabetes Center.

The care team is focused on wellness for healthy aging and brain health, including Alzheimer’s disease research and care. The flexible clinical layout fosters interdisciplinary engagement and interaction as providers work effectively and efficiently promoting a better outcome for every patient.

The facility is designed to meet certification requirements for WELL Building Standards, developed by the International WELL Building Institute. By achieving this certification, the Nappi Wellness Institute will be the first WELL certified healthcare facility in New York and will optimize health and well-being in seven areas: air, comfort, fitness, light, mind, nourishment, and water.

In addition, the Institute also is also seeking LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, recognizing best-in-class building strategies and practices in sustainability.

Supported by company-wide proprietary research, experience in lean design, modular construction, and alternative project delivery models, Stantec is a fully integrated practice, drawing on global expertise to deliver progressive care environments that improve patient outcomes and attract top talent.
