Within the health care design industry, many trends pop up, and it’s important to differentiate ones that are simply fads versus those that can have a long-term, positive impact on the forward movement of health care design in the present and future.


SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The $115 million Mercy Orthopedic Hospital opened in late August to offer a wide range of orthopedic and spine services to the local community of Springfield, Mo.
Mike Thomas has been named vice president and business development director at Environmental Systems Design Inc. (ESD), an international leader in the consulting-engineering design of high performance building systems. CASTLE ROCK, Colo. — Construction on the new Castle Rock Adventist Hospital, which began in the summer of 2011, reached completion earlier this month. HuntonBrady Architects, a health care architectural firm based in Orlando, Fla., designed the 219,000-square-foot hospital.
Inpatient units traditionally have been designed around a central hub consisting of a large communal nurses’ station, medication room, supply room and other support rooms.
