Modular Building Institute Awards

Every year the Modular Building Institute sponsors an awards program that recognizes the best projects in commercial modular building design and construction.

The ceremony to present the awards was held earlier this year during MBI’s annual convention and tradeshow in Las Vegas. Each entry was reviewed by a panel of industry and non-industry construction and code experts, architects and engineers, and marketing professionals.

The following received first-place awards. A full list of awards and case studies are available at: www.modular.org/awards

Permanent facility, less than 5,000 sq. ft.
VA Medical Center
Location: Minneapolis
Area: 6,860 square feet
Company: Satellite Shelters Inc.
Affiliate: Whitley Manufacturing Co. Inc.
This project was delivered with a design-build contract on a limited site area. Satellite Shelters recommended exterior finishes and colors similar to an existing building on the site to provide aesthetic compatibility.
• Interior finishes and colors are identical to the existing hospital to provide continuity as patients and staff moved between buildings. The building is designed to allow accessibility to all areas with a perimeter corridor outfitted with hospital-grade railings and corner guards.
A commercial accordion wall was installed in the large therapy room to provide the ability to assemble small groups. Training rooms with kitchen appliances and computer stations were also provided and are used to train and rehabilitate disabled veterans.

Permanent facility, more than 5,000 sq. ft.
La Campana
Location: Clexico, Ariz.
Area: 13,410 square feet
Company: Modular Technology Inc.
The design for this project was finalized in collaboration with the owner/architect. The design goal was to incorporate the building seamlessly with the adjacent buildings, which include a 1950s-era surf-theme motel and an 1800s mission-style two-story hotel.
Features include modern translucent Kalwal panels, decorative perforated metal trim, expansive glazing mixed with a traditional Spanish tile roof, stucco and hand-crafted ornamental iron. The roofline features several modern angles and a traditional bell tower that draw attention to the building. The bell is from a Methodist church that once occupied the site.

Temporary facility less than 5,000 sq. ft.
West Cecil Health Center
Location: Conowingo, Md.
Area: 2,772 square feet
Company: Modular Genius Inc.
Affiliate: Diamond Builders Inc.
A small, rural community was in need of local healthcare and applied for a federal grant to support its vision of bringing healthcare close to home. The facility had to be operational in a matter of months to comply with the federal grant.
The building matches the exterior color and trim of and adjacent community bank that leases the site to the healthcare provider. A concrete ramp and site-built A-frame canopy were constructed to improve aesthetics at the entrance. The interior floor plan was designed to centralize the nurses’ station in the middle of the building with offices and exam and procedure rooms on all four sides.

Temporary facility, more than 5,000 sq. ft.
Medical Campus Facility
Location: Cleveland
Area: 12,648 square feet
Company: Innovative Modular Solutions Inc.
Affiliate: Whitley Manufacturing
The client needed an interim facility to ensure all programs continued during a master building plan that was expected to last for more than 10 years.
The facility is used to house all levels of medical staff during demolition and reconstruction. The building team designed a single-story L-shaped building that compliments the surrounding environment, maintains the flow of the campus and fits on the limited land available at the site. The facility was constructed with a permanent foundation to provide ground-level installation and blend with the adjacent buildings. Its visual appearance is further enhanced with a freestanding canopy, ground cover, landscaping and lighting accents.
