Florida Hospital Begins Construction Expansion

WESLEY CHAPEL, Fla. — Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel will begin construction this year on a $78 million expansion that will nearly double the size of patient rooms, operating rooms and emergency rooms.

“Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel was originally designed with the ability to grow with the needs of the community,” said Chief Medical Officer Robert Rosequist in a statement. “Since opening less than three years ago, the hospital has experienced extremely high volumes of patients seeking care.”

Hospital Maternity Care Underperforms, Study Finds

WASHINGTON — Maternity care at hospitals nationwide is progressing although there is still room for improvement, according to The Leapfrog Group, a Washington-based nonprofit that provides analysis for the health care industry.

The organization released its annual Maternity Care Report on Feb. 23. The report provides an examination of hospital quality and safety for early elective deliveries, episiotomies and high-risk deliveries. Leapfrog developed the report together with San Francisco-based Castlight Health, a health care information company.

Florida, New York Hospitals Combine Cardiac Care

JUPITER, Fla. — Jupiter Medical Center in south Florida and The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York are teaming up to enhance cardiac patient care services and research in south Florida, the organizations confirmed on Feb. 27.

The partnership, officially called Mount Sinai Heart New York at Jupiter Medical Center, will help the two organizations cover all facets of cardiac care, including interventional cardiology, cardiac rehabilitation, electrophysiology, non-invasive imaging, congestive heart failure, wellness and prevention, and research and education.

Children’s Hospital Named for Nicklaus Family

MIAMI — Miami Children’s Health System has teamed with the Nicklaus Children’s Health Foundation to build the hospital’s Advanced Pediatric Care Pavilion, and will change the name of the main hospital to the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. Jack Nicklaus, professional golfer and philanthropist, together with his wife Barbara Nicklaus, launched the Nicklaus Children’s Health Foundation in 2004, and have just announced its $60 million pledge to the Miami Children’s Health System.

New Children’s Hospital Opens in Memphis

MEMPHIS, Ala. — Construction on Memphis’ new multimillion-dollar Spence and Becky Wilson Baptist Children’s Hospital wrapped up in late January. The centerpiece of the new facility, a $14.1 million, 10-room, 17,000-square-foot emergency department, began accepting patients on Jan. 28. The hospital expects to see upwards of 7,300 patients in its first year.

Hospitals Honored for Charitable Services

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Six hospital programs were named Programs of Promise by Jackson Healthcare of Alpharetta, which sponsors awards honoring hospitals that aim to improve the health of local communities.

Each hospital program was awarded $2,500 through the Hospital Charitable Services Awards, which is sponsored by Jackson Healthcare. This year’s six Programs of Promise were selected from a pool of 208 nominees. Each nominee had to demonstrate excellence in five criteria areas: community impact, innovation, collaboration, transferability and best practice.

Facebook CEO Donates $75 Million to San Francisco Hospital

SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco General Hospital Foundation is getting a historic grant of $75 million from Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Dr. Priscilla Chan’s donor-advised fund at the Silicon Valley Community Foundation for San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (The General).

The General is the city’s only trauma center. The grant is the largest single gift the foundation has received since it was established in 1994. It is also believed to be the largest private gift from individuals to a public hospital in the U.S.

ROARING SPRING, Pa. — LifePoint Hospitals, a health care provider based in Brentwood, Tenn., and the board of directors at Nason Hospital in Roaring Spring, Pa., announced on Feb. 2 that LifePoint has finalized the acquisition of Nason Hospital.

As part of the acquisition, Nason Hospital has become part of Johnstown, Pa.-based Conemaugh Health System. Together with LifePoint and Conemaugh, Nason will enhance and expand the services it provides and work to improve health care throughout its region.
