A New Era for Senior Living

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas A new senior living concept is coming to Corpus Christi with the construction of the Village at Oso Bay, a prototype design for Atlanta-based Thrive Senior Living. An informal groundbreaking took place on June 18. Corpus Christi-based Ewing Construction Co. is the general contractor on the project.

The 56-unit assisted living and memory care facility will feature four uniquely themed neighborhoods with its own respective living and dining amenities. A shared Main Street area will connect the 3.4-acre community and will feature a barbershop, spa, town hall and doctor’s office. A portion of the community will be dedicated to residents with dementia-related illnesses. Retirement communities are really advancing these days, meaning that more people are looking into them. When people start thinking of retiring, they need to know that their accommodation will be suitable for them. Retirement communities, like La Posada, prioritize the individual’s wellbeing and ensure that there are multiple things for them to do. This allows the residents to experience the relaxed retirement that they deserve.

The use of technology allows residents to have their freedoms, while still getting quality care. In fact, residents will not even need a key. Computer chip-enabled bracelets will allow anyone living at, working at, or visiting the property to access parts of the community, including a resident’s personal suite. The facility will feature 24-hour staff, motion monitors, safety-equipped bathrooms, security and fire safety monitoring, and wireless call systems so that they can communicate with people easily. These new facilities will give senior citizens a living space, that will cater to their needs at different mobility levels. An early look at plans showed apartments with accessibility in mind, like mobility bathrooms from Practical Bathing, elevators, and ramps giving them easy access to different parts of the complex. Communication and accessibility were two primary focuses within the plans, ensuring that the residents were able to travel and keep in contact with those around them. They could even make use of these simple mobile phone with large buttons for elderly person to help them keep in contact with their family members as well, thanks to technology, retiring has never been so easy. The facility’s location, close to Corpus Christi Bay Area Medical Center, is convenient for the residents and staff.

In early June, Aries Capital completed a $7.5 million loan for the project, which helped make construction possible. The difficulty in sourcing a lender for this type of facility is the start-up costs required by the Borrower to cover marketing and presales, said Leonard Smith, senior vice president for Aries Capital, in a statement. Many capital sources don’t understand health care and aren’t willing to include those items. We worked diligently to pair the project with the right lender that was comfortable with the industry and willing to finance the development.

The project is scheduled for completion in early 2014. It will be Thrive Senior Livings fourteenth property managed.
