New Hospitals Rise in Post-Katrina New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS — Among the losses of Hurricane Katrina and the flooding it brought to the Gulf Coast, perhaps one of the greatest blows was the destruction of vital structures like a VA medical hospital in New Orleans, La. Now the Department of Veterans Affairs is constructing a replacement, which is intended to provide a massive upgrade over the previous facility. Major hurricanes have been known to devastate local medical services, leaving them crippled for years in some cases.
Helen Ryan was recently named the permanent director of nursing for the Yeovil District Hospital Foundation Trust in Yeovil, England. Now with nearly 20 years of experience and service at this district, Ryan originally joined the team when she took charge of the intensive care unit in 1993. She later on became the nurse consultant responsible for critical care. Ryan also spent six years on Yeovil District Hospital’s board of governors as a staff governor.
Christine Close, RN, BSN, has been appointed to clinical nurse manager of the urgent care center at Oswego Health’s soon-to-be-opened Central Square Medical Center in Oswego, N.Y. With over 14 years of experience in the health care field, Close was initially hired as a staff nurse to work on one of Oswego Hospital’s medical/surgical floors.
SAN FRANCISCO — The city by the bay is now home to the country’s first privately held surgical/dental office to achieve LEED Platinum certification.
Health care industry veteran, Brenda Traweek has been named chief operating officer for the Brookwood Medical Center. Having previously served as vice president of operations and assistant vice president of surgical services, Traweek has worked with Brookwood since 2003. Most recently, she held the position of vice president of the hospital’s patient care services, where she was responsible for the operational and financial management of the nursing division.
