Headwall Wins International Design Award

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — A headwall designed exclusively for the University of California-San Diego Jacobs Medical Center received first prize in the Industrial and Life Science Design category for the International Design Awards (IDA). Overland Park-based Shield Casework, the manufacturer of the headwall, made the announcement July 31.
The annual IDA competition recognizes and honors innovations in the categories of architecture, interior, product, graphic and fashion design.
Developed by Chicago-based Cannon Design and crafted by Shield Casework, the headwall stands out as an architectural — rather than institutional — patient-room element by merging hundreds of feet of infrastructure into a compact hub. The creation combines function and evidence-based design by containing the room’s technology in a single canopy. The canopy features custom angled outlet covers and integrates medical technology such as gases, electrical devices, nurse call buttons, recessed lighting and HVAC controls.
The canopy is also built with Shield’s thermoformed solid surface fabrication that clads the metal framework, creating a nonporous surface that reduces the risk of transferring infections.
Cannon Design has won multiple awards for its designs in the health care industry. Shield Casework President Stephen Hopkins told the Kansas City Business Journal in April that the company expects to finish this year with almost $3 million in revenue.
