Cleveland Clinic to Consult on Kaleida Heart Center

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Cleveland Clinic, a healthcare organization once cited by President Obama as a model of excellence, has been hired by Kaleida Health to consult on a new hospital’s heart-care program, including its policies, procedures, personnel, outcome and facilities. The consulting agreement was reached as construction continues in downtown Buffalo on a new 10-story, $291 million Kaleida vascular care and medical research facility.

The vascular center is joint venture between Kaleida Health and the University at Buffalo. UB plans to use half the floors for medical research, while the other half will consolidate Kaleida Health’s heart, stroke and vascular care programs currently at Buffalo General and Millard Fillmore Hospitals.

Officials say the new hospital will bring together different specialties and programs from different hospitals, presenting an opportunity to adopt best practices from an organization with a world-wide reputation of excellence.

The building results from the state-mandated linkup of Kaleida Health and Erie County Medical Center, which now operates under a parent corporation, Great Lakes Health. Medical center physicians plan to work in the new center. Kaleida Health and clinic officials have not disclosed the exact cost of the agreement but it could potentially be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
