OCEANSIDE, N.Y. — After several years of construction, Mount Sinai South Nassau’s new Feil Family Pavilion is partially open and is welcoming patients and guests on the building’s first and second floors. The third level of the 100,000-square-foot, $113 million structure is expected to open in September. The project marks the hospital’s largest capital project to date.
According to a statement by Group PMX, the owner’s representative and project manager of the Mount Sinai Health System, full operationalization will continue through the end of 2025 and into the first quarter of 2026, gradually bringing the four-story addition fully online. The Feil Family Pavilion (also called the J Wing) is the centerpiece of a nearly $400 million campus expansion that will double the size of the emergency department and add nine operating rooms and a 40-bed critical care unit. The J Wing broke ground in June 2021 and represents the hospital’s largest expansion since Superstorm Sandy, reinforcing resiliency while meeting the growing demand for emergency, surgical, and intensive care services on the South Shore.
The project also expands critical care areas, as the number of patients in need of highly specialized care is on the rise. Additionally, the emergency department will nearly double in size. Presently the facility treats an average of 65,000 patients annually but was built to handle just 35,000. Projections also indicate that annual emergency room visits could grow to 80,000. In response, the facility was expanded to the approximate length of a football field and will include an estimated 50 treatment areas, expanded ambulance bays and better lines of sight for physicians and nursing staff, as well as improved waiting areas, and separate areas for Pediatric and Behavioral Health.
New operating rooms will allow for the inclusion of modern robotic and diagnostic equipment, while the patient experience will be enhanced via improved access and comfort, including larger and enhanced Patient Treatment Areas, Observation and Family Waiting Rooms and separate entrances for walk-in patients and ambulances.
Group PMX has overseen planning, budgeting, scheduling, and phased activation for the complex project, managing FEMA compliance and coordination across an active hospital campus and ensuring that the project remains on track, aligning construction closeout with operational readiness.
The project team also includes architect HOK, general contractor The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company, glazing and storefront contractor Above All Storefronts, and engineering partners such as WSP, LERA Consulting Structural Engineers, VHB, and Shen Milsom & Wilke, alongside additional partner CBRE.
