WENTZVILLE, Mo. — A groundbreaking ceremony was held May 13 to celebrate the first brand-new, acute care hospital campus to be built in Missouri in nearly a decade. The new Mercy Hospital in Wentzville will span approximately 400,000 square feet, offering a spectrum of services to one of the state’s fastest-growing communities.
The project was initially approved by the Missouri Facilities Review Committee in July 2024 following community roundtable discussions to better understand and respond to the community’s healthcare needs. The project was then estimated at $635 million. Site work, including grading and the initial development of a centralized utility plant, began in March. Construction of the future-focused medical tower is expected to begin in early 2026, wrapping up in 2030.
“This isn’t just the start of construction—it’s the beginning of a transformative journey for health care in Wentzville and the tri-county region,” said David Argueta, senior vice president of community operations for Mercy Hospital, in a statement. “After months of listening to and learning from neighboring businesses, residents and our community advisory council, we’re excited to move toward meeting the healthcare needs of the area.”
The first Mercy Hospital located site near St. Louis was originally an apple orchard. The land was purchased in the late 1950s by the Sisters of Mercy and was redeveloped as a hospital to offer medical care to the local community. The Mercy Hospital system has expanded exponentially over the years, becoming one of the 15 largest health systems in the U.S. and serving millions of patients annually. The highly integrated, multi-state health care system includes 50 acute care and specialty (heart, children’s, orthopedic and rehab) hospitals, convenient and urgent care locations, imaging centers and pharmacies.
Plans for the new Mercy Hospital Wentzville include 75 inpatient acute care beds and a 26-bed emergency department with two trauma areas and four behavioral health rooms. Additionally, the campus will offer a broad range of inpatient and outpatient care to the region, including surgical and specialty options such as cardiovascular, cancer and orthopedics as well as outpatient imaging, diagnostic and treatment services.
Mercy Hospital Wentzville was designed by CannonDesign, and the project team also includes engineer IMEG. McCarthy Building Companies was selected to manage the construction process, which includes working closely with union labor throughout the region.
“We’re honored to continue our long-term partnership with Mercy to expand world-class medical care in one of the state’s fastest-growing communities,” said Mike Stapf, McCarthy vice president and St. Louis healthcare market leader, in a statement. “It’s a privilege to help bring Mercy’s transformative vision for health care in Wentzville and across the region to life.”
