JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—Dana B. Kenyon Company (DBK) and Gresham Smith announced in late June the completion of a new multispecialty surgery center, home to Jax Spine & Pain Centers and UF Health Jacksonville, under the direction of UF Jacksonville Physicians, Inc. The largest free-standing multispecialty surgery center in the region, the 54,000-square-foot facility was designed and constructed to offer specialized health care services, outpatient surgeries convenient to the community, interventional spine procedures and pain management. DBK delivered this facility using their design-build approach and partnered with Gresham Smith, the architect and interior designer, and ETM, the civil engineer.
“Our design for this facility focused on not only creating a welcoming, comfortable environment but also providing a space that empowers physicians to provide patients with the highest level of spinal care and pain management,” said Rick Bouchereau, AIA, vice president at Gresham Smith. “We’re honored to have worked with Jax Spine & Pain Centers and UF Health to create a facility that will give residents in southeast Jacksonville convenient access to specialty outpatient surgical care, and comprehensive specialty care, all in one location.”
Highly visible from J. Turner Butler Boulevard, one of Jacksonville’s busiest roadways, the new facility is a modern landmark on Jacksonville’s southeast side. The building can be seen from every angle on surrounding roadways, which required camouflaging the back-of-house functions. Wood accents and earth tones on the building’s modern exterior provide aesthetic warmth, and the glass and wood canopy over the main entrance offers shelter from the elements and creates a sense of arrival.
“The interior design team and DBK worked closely with the doctors at Jax Spine & Pain Centers and the executive director of support services at UF Health to incorporate their vision into the space. UF Health’s clinical space on the second floor is cohesive with other new UF Health locations, offering quality care in a luxury setting, while the finishes and lighting in Jax Spine & Pain Center’s space on the third floor evoke a sense of calm for pain management patients,” said Gresham Smith Senior Interior Designer Mary Couch, RID, IIDA, LEED AP BD+C.
Always keeping patient comfort and convenience in mind during design and construction, the main lobby features warm earth tones, durable terrazzo flooring, and a custom wood feature wall with integrated lighting to create a relaxing, spa-like environment. The first floor houses an ambulatory surgery center with four operating rooms, two endoscopy rooms, a separate pain procedure suite with four procedure rooms, and a dedicated MRI suite. Visitors to UF Health clinics on the second floor enjoy views of the large green roof while waiting, and standardized exam rooms organized around centralized work hubs create an efficient, pleasant patient experience. Located on the third floor, Jax Spine & Pain Center includes exam rooms, two procedure rooms, infusion rooms, a lab, offices, staff support spaces, and open waiting areas with large windows and views of the surrounding neighborhood.
“Despite the challenges of constructing this project during the pandemic, DBK is proud of the accomplishments of the entire team,” said Joe Bajalia, President of DBK. “After the successful completion of multiple facilities for the group of doctors at the Jax Spine & Pain Centers, we are proud to continue our partnership providing innovative healthcare to the community.”
This project continues Dana B. Kenyon/Gresham Smith’s partnership with Jax Spine & Pain Centers. The firms previously designed and constructed the CenterOne Surgery Center and Medical Office Building on Centurion Road. The new multispecialty surgery center & medical office building is located at 5191 First Coast Tech Parkway in Jacksonville.
