German Hospital Celebrates Grand Opening of Radebeul Expansion

RADEBEUL, Germany — The Elbland Hospital in Radebeul, Germany, celebrated the opening of the first phase of intensive expansion and renovation efforts on March 15, 2019.

HDR Inc. is responsible for the planning and implementation of the new 43,055-square-foot, three-story building.

With this expansion, Elbland Hospital complements its existing range of services in gynecology by establishing a center of excellence in senology with a clinic for plastic, reconstructive and breast surgery.

The design draws its inspiration from nature in an effort to capture a harmonious, interior environment, and was created for the recovery and well-being of the patients as well as for the highly qualified medical work of the Radebeul Elbland Hospital.

Inspired by its location in the midst of the vineyards of the Elbe Valley, the new indoor and outdoor spaces are tightly connected. The natural shades of brown, green and berry tones of the interior design refer to the colors and materials characteristic of the region.

The construction work at Elbland Hospital is divided into two phases.

In the first phase, the new three-story building was completed and houses the interdisciplinary emergency department, the Department of Senology and administrative support.

The relocation of the existing emergency room to the new building creates space for the renovation and expansion of the central operating floor, a change that will be implemented soon in the second phase.

For about 60 years, HDR has been designing and realizing high-quality and functional buildings in the fields of health, science and education as one of the leading architectural practices in Germany with over 1,000 successfully completed projects having a total volume of more than $8 billion.
