Parkview Huntington Hospital Breaks Ground on Expansion

HUNTINGTON, Ind. —  The Parkview Huntington Hospital in Huntington symbolically broke ground on its hospital expansion project during a private, invitation-only ceremony on Nov. 17. Construction will begin later this month, and is anticipated to be complete early in 2019.

The expansion project is intended to enhance the hospital’s Rehabilitation and Wellness Department and add new services, including state-of-the-art treatment for non-healing wounds. Moake Park Group based out of Fort Wayne, Ind., is the architect of record for the project, with Weigand Construction — also based out of Fort Wayne — serving as the general contractor. The project has a budget of $8.5 million.

The 20,271-square-foot addition will extend the current Rehabilitation and Wellness Department space to the east and will join it with the back of the John B. Kay Medical Office Building. The Parkview Huntington Hospital Wound Clinic will occupy 3,657 square feet of space and will have its own exterior entrance at the northeast corner of the property.

The expansion will provide a home for the new wound clinic, which will offer the latest clinically proven wound-care methods. The new facility will feature two state-of-the-art hyperbaric chambers to promote the healing of wounds caused by diabetes, burns or other injuries, vasculitis and many other conditions. In addition, the expansion will enable pediatric therapy services to move from the hospital’s lower level to a larger, specially designed area incorporating sensory, motor skills and physical therapy gyms as well as a space for pediatric occupational therapy and speech therapy.

The expansion will also provide additional private consultation rooms and exam rooms dedicated to particular types of therapy for adult patients that include lymphedema therapy, dry needling and manual therapy. It will also feature a larger space for the Activities of Daily Living Lab, where rehabilitation patients will focus on regaining skills such as getting in and out of bed, bathing and performing household tasks. The expansion will also house the newly renovated Adult Fitness Center.

“The expanded space will allow us to offer more treatment options and wellness services for patients in a more comfortable environment,” said Juli Johnson, president, of Parkview Huntington Hospital in a recent interview with the Huntington County Tab. “And the new wound clinic will make a tremendous difference in the lives of people who deal with painful, stubborn wounds.”
