Riverview Begins New Cancer Center Construction

RED BANK, N.J. — Riverview Medical Center broke ground in July 2015 for its new cancer center, an expansion and renovation project that will help bring enhanced cancer services to patients in Red Bank.

The project is part of a $128 million investment by Meridian Health, a health care provider based in Wall Township, N.J. The overall project will provide patients with better access through six expansion projects.

“Our community has come to know and rely on the exceptional cancer services here at Riverview,” said Timothy Hogan, FACHE, regional hospital president for Monmouth County, in a statement. “While the project will revolve around changes to the bricks and mortar and programmatic developments, what I’m most excited about is what it means to patient care. This project will set the tone for the way we deliver cancer care, providing access to even more expertise, enhanced resources and an optimal patient experience.”

Riverview’s expansion will feature a 29,000-square-foot addition, as well as physical, visual, and technical upgrades. They include floor-to-ceiling windows in each of 20 infusion bays, which will provide patients with a view of the nearby Navesink River. Additionally, two TrueBeam linear accelerators will provide advanced radiation therapy technology.

The project will also bring in additional health care specialists to provide a multi-disciplinary approach to care.

Riverview’s inpatient unit will undergo a transformation, creating private patient rooms with individual bathrooms and showers, a new respite suite and family conference area, a physician work room, and enhanced nurses work stations. Cancer services currently provided at Riverview will continue throughout the duration of the project.

“Extraordinary things are happening at Meridian, and today’s celebration marks a series of milestones that will be taking place over the next three years,” said John K. Lloyd, FACHE, president of Meridian Health, in a statement. “Meridian is taking things to the next level and building hope with new cancer specialists, even more advanced technology, and a truly multi-disciplinary approach to care.”

The first of six cancer projects was introduced in March, when Meridian Cancer Care at Jackson Health Village was opened. Riverview’s project is the first in Monmouth County. Similar expansions and renovations at Bayshore Community Hospital in Holmdel, N.J, Ocean Medical Center in Brick, N.J, Southern Ocean Medical Center in Manahawkin, N.J., and Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune City, N.J., will round out Meridian’s investment, which are planned to be complete in 2017.

“This is an incredible investment in our community, bringing extraordinary oncology care closer to home,” said Mark J. Krasna, M.D., medical director of Meridian Cancer Care, in a statement. When you package all these tremendous resources together, patient centered care is what individuals will find at Meridian Cancer Care. It is the cornerstone of our vision and commitment to building hope in New Jersey, and truly sets us apart from others.”
