Groundbreaking for U.S. Hospital in South Korea

CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea — A groundbreaking ceremony was recently held in Camp Humphreys, South Korea on the future site of the Brian Allgood Army Community Hospital and the Camp Humphreys Dental Clinic.

Slated for completion in 2015, the new hospital will contain 68 beds and support 65,000 eligible beneficiaries and 5,000 annual inpatient admissions. The ambulatory care center will be able to support 56,000 eligible beneficiaries and 200,000 annual outpatient visits, while the dental clinic will have 79 chairs and be equipped to support 40,000 eligible beneficiaries per year.

“With the groundbreaking for this new facility in Colonel Allgood’s honor, we publicly acknowledge his invaluable contributions to the Army, in general, and to Army medicine, specifically,” said Lt. Gen. Patricia D. Horoho, the U.S. Army Surgeon General. “Although his name will be emboldened across the front of this facility for all time, it already resides deeply within our hearts.”

In 2008, the 121st Combat Support Hospital, located on Yongsan Garrison, was renamed in honor of Allgood, who died along with 11 other U.S. service members when their UH-60 helicopter was shot down by enemy rocket fire on Jan. 20, 2007. Allgood, who previously had been commander at 121st CSH, was then serving as the command surgeon for Multi-National Forces-Iraq.

The project is being built by Samsung Consortium. The construction is being funded by the Republic of Korea as a way of showing its commitment to continuing the base relocation of U.S. forces in Korea. More projects will follow as Humphreys becomes the premier U.S. military installation in Korea.
