AECOM Earns Engineering Award for Baltimore Hospital

ARLINGTON, Va. — AECOM Technology Corp. earned national recognition for its design of the Mary Catherine Bunting Center at Mercy, a 700,000-square-foot replacement hospital in Baltimore, Md.

The Arlington, Va.-based group earned the award in the category of Building/Technology Systems in the American Council of Engineering Companies’ 2012 Engineering Excellence Awards competition, presented at a gala in Washington, D.C. April 17.

The design for the 21-story hospital, which is located in a space-constrained area in downtown Baltimore, features a three-level roof garden that minimizes the building’s heat island effect, reduces demand on stormwater systems and reduces air and noise pollution.

The rooftop garden also serves as a symbolic extension of the adjacent Preston Gardens and the centerpiece of the hospital’s healing environment.

The building systems were designed to reduce water usage, optimize energy performance, improve outside aesthetics and minimize indoor pollution.

In addition to the ACEC award, the hospital has earned recognition from the AIA Washington, D.C., the Washington Building Congress and ACEC’s Maryland chapter.
